In the near future, Brazilians will be able to earn money from their own data, using information that already provides daily for state and market operations. This was the main discussion of the panel “Owning Your Own Data”, held during the Web Summit Rio 2025which brought together experts from different sectors to discuss how to transform Personal Capital Data.
The central idea debated was the evolution of the data privacy discussion for a new level: the property of personal data. The president of, Rodrigo Assumpção, explained how the Brazilian public company, in partnership with Drumwave company, is developing an initiative that can monetize data already generated in payroll loan contracts.
According to him, the pilot project will use information from Dataprev intermediate contracts to place the data in “”. “Citizens will be able to authorize the use of this data for monetization, either to complement income or invest in a data savings,” he said.
The proposal includes allowing citizens to choose whether or not to participate in monetization, with the option of leaving at any time. “The most interesting point will be between SIM and NO, in this intermediate zone of limited or partial use of the data,” added Rodrigo Assumpção.
Financial System and Open Finance
Already, former president of the Central Bank, compared the data system with the financial system, pointing out similarities between the intermediaries that regulate the access and use of information. “The creation of a market with a defined price for data units allows the formation of a new class of assets,” he said.
Franco also listed the initiative to the global movement of, ongoing in several countries, in which bank data can be shared between institutions from customer consent. “Personal data has value, and citizens need to decide how, when and by whom they will be used. It increases competition and benefits the consumer,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brittany Kaiser, founder of Own Your Data organization, stressed that the model can bring benefits to companies. “For the first time, users would be being paid for the use of their data, which will encourage them to interact more with digital products and services. This improves engagement and expands the market to participating companies,” he said.
Brazilian pioneering
Brittany stressed that Brazil is a pioneer among the countries that are leading to the discussion of data to the sphere of individual property with federal law ongoing and a robust pilot project. If approved, and with more institutions adhering to the model, the country is expected to lead a new economy based on digital sovereignty.
“Other countries have experiences at local level or generic proposals, but Brazil is the first to have a [projeto piloto nacional]with institutional support and legislation debated in Congress, ”he explained.

The President of Dataprevi added that the system will be simple for the user, not requiring the adoption of blockchain or sophisticated applications. “We will use the apps that already exist, such as Social Security, and include the functionality so that the person authorizes or not the use of data,” said Assumpção.
But for the success of the project, Own Your Data founder argued that the focus is on digital education and broad access to tools. “It may seem little to earn some reais a day with data, but for billions of people in the world, this is a transformative opportunity,” says Brittany.
