Moscow (Reuters)-Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to peace in Ukraine and intense work is being done with the United States, but the conflict is so complicated that the rapid progress that Washington wants is hard to achieve, Kremlin said on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump, who says he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, has repeatedly said he wants to end the “blood bath” of the war in Ukraine.

But Washington has noted that he is frustrated by Moscow and Kiev’s failure to reach an agreement to end the deadliest land war in Europe since World War II.

“The (Russian) president is still open to political and diplomatic methods to resolve this conflict,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

He noted that Putin had expressed his willingness to direct conversations with Ukraine, but had not yet received any response from Kiev.

Russia’s goals have to be achieved anyway, he added, saying that Moscow’s preference is to achieve these goals peacefully.

“We understand that Washington is willing to get a quick success in this process,” Peskov said in English. But, according to Tass news agency, Peskov said the causes of war in Ukraine are very complex to resolve in one day.

Putin’s decision to send tens of thousands of soldiers to Ukraine in 2022 triggered the worst confrontation between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuba missile crisis.

Former US President Joe Biden, the leaders of Western Europe and Ukraine classify the invasion as an appropriation of imperial-style land and promptly promised to defeat the Russian forces.

Putin presents the war as a decisive moment in Moscow’s relations with the West, which, according to him, humiliated Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, expanding the NATO and invading what the Moscow’s sphere of influence considers, including Ukraine.
