The EU is preparing plan B to maintain sanctions against Russia if the US abandon peace negotiations and are considering an agreement with Moscow.
The European Union is preparing plan B on how to preserve sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, in case the United States will abandon peace negotiations and try to get closer to Russia. Kaja Kallas, a High EU representative for foreign affairs and security policy on Wednesday, said it for the Financial Times. Informs TASR.
According to Kallas, the EU sees indications that the US is considering whether they should withdraw from the intermediation of the war interview between Ukraine and Russia and not to try to agree with the Russians. American diplomacy chief Marco Rubio reiterated on Tuesday that the US would not continue in this effort if Moscow and Kiev would not submit concrete proposals.

“We also have a plan B, but we have to work on the plan and; otherwise you focus on Plan B and then it happens,” she told Kallas, referring to a possible withdrawal of the US. According to her, talks with Washington and other EU international partners are currently underway in order to ensure that the Western sanction regime against Moscow is maintained.
The Axios server recently came up with information that Washington presented the peace framework presupposes de jure recognition of Russian control of Crimea, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2014, and de facto recognition of the Russian occupation of almost the entire Luhansk region and parts of the Donetsk and Zaporozan region. Russia would also get a promise that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO, but will be able to join the EU. The United States would also abolish sanctions imposed on Russia since 2014.
