Drinking eight half -liters of beer or eight glasses of wine a week is considered a quite healthy rate. According to Brazilian scientists, however, this is exactly the limit when the toxic effects of alcohol begin to manifest on the brain. In people who drink eight or more half -liters of beer a week, or eight or more two -sequine glasses of wine a week, the likelihood of dementia increases dramatically.
Brazilian scientists have found that this amount of alcohol doubles the risk of brain damage, which is often a harbinger of neurodegenerative disease. Although dementia does not develop, damage itself can cause memory and thinking problems at an older age. In a study attended by 1,781 people, the authors found that those who drank more than eight alcoholic beverages a week also died on average thirteen years earlier than those who never drank.
“Our research shows that high alcohol consumption is damaging the brain, which can lead to memory and thinking problems,” The scientists from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paule introduced scientists. The study included an autopsy of the brain of 1,781 people who had an average age of 75 years at the time of death. The results of the study were published in the magazine Neurology.
“Excessive alcohol consumption is a major health problem worldwide, which is associated with an increase in health problems and deaths. Understanding these effects is of fundamental importance to the public awareness and for preventing excessive drinking of alcohol, ” The authors report.
