US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would like to be a Pope and noted that New York Cardinal, Timothy Dolan, is “very good,” although he has no preference to Francis’ successor.
“I would like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice,” Trump said in the White House.
Asked if he had any favorite for the conclave, he replied that he had no preference, but praised the American cardinal Timothy Dolan.
“I must say that there is a cardinal from a place called New York that is very good. Let’s see what happens,” he said.
Cardinal Dolan is the Archbishop of New York and will be one of the US prelates present in the conclave, which, from May 7, will elect Pope Francis’ successor, who died on 21 April.
The United States will have ten cardinals represented in the conclave, and Dolan was present in the 2013 conclave, where the Argentine cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected Pope, who named Francisco.
Dolan received two votes in 2013 and will be present again in this new conclave until the new pontiff is announced with white smoke.
Other American cardinals mentioned as favorites include Raymond Burke, considered the favorite among conservatives, and Robert Prevost, appointed by Francis’ as mayor of the dicker for the bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, as well as fluent in Spanish.
The Mass that marks the beginning of the new Pope’s electoral conclave will be presided by the dean of cardinals and the oath of employees and religious who will accompany the work will be celebrated on Monday, the Vatican announced today.

Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, on December 17, 1936, Francisco was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to reach the leadership of the Catholic Church.
His last public appearance was on Easter Sunday at the Vatican.
