On his 110th birthday, he was honored by Pope Francis
Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro, who was the oldest person in the world, died on Wednesday in Porto Alegre, a few weeks before he was 117 years old, his religious congregation said Thursday.
The company of Santa Teresa de Jesus said that Inah Canabarro died in the house of natural causes. The wake will be held today in Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Born in 1908 in the municipality of São Francisco de Assis (Rio Grande do Sul), the nun would turn 117 on the 27th.
Canabarro was confirmed in January as the oldest person in the world by Longerviquest, an organization that Supercentian tracking around the world, after the death of Japanese Tomiko Itoka in December 2024, 116.
According to Longeviquest, Inah Canabarro was classified as the oldest person ever documented to have lived, a list led by the French Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at 122.

Canabarro was the second oldest nun ever documented after Lucile Randon, who was the oldest person in the world until his death in 2023 at the age of 118.
