Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he will meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington next Tuesday (6), marking the first face-to-face meeting between the two since Carry won the elections in part with a message contrary to Trump.
“It is important to engage immediately, which has always been my intention and also his. I am pleased to have the opportunity to hold a very comprehensive series of meetings that will take place on Tuesday,” Carry told reporters in Ottawa, confirming an earlier report from Bloomberg News.
The meeting will focus on commercial issues and the broader relationship between Canada and the US, the prime minister said. He pointed out that the conversations will be “difficult but constructive” and warned that no one should expect immediate agreement on the trade war, which led the US to impose tariffs on steel, automobiles and other Canadian products, while Canada retaliated with its own rates on a variety of goods manufactured in the US.
The face -to -face meeting is of great importance to Carry, who led his liberal party to a surprising victory promising to overcome the US business war and protect Canadian sovereignty in the face of American aggression. He rejected Trump’s threats to transform Canada into the 51st US state, stating that the former economic and security relationship with the US “is over.”
Trump had anticipated a visit at a cabinet meeting earlier this week when he said Carry was coming to the US capital “within a week or less.” The two leaders talked by telephone on Tuesday, and Carry said Trump did not mention his desire to make Canada an American state-an idea rejected by a vast majority of Canadians.
Trump began the trade war against Canada by signing an executive order in February, claiming that tariffs were necessary due to the role of Canada in the Fentanil trade. US government data show that only small amounts of the illicit drug entering the US comes from Canada. Carry said on Friday that it is unclear why Fentanil-related tariffs are still in force.

Canada retaliated against US measures with tariffs about about C $ 60 billion ($ 43.5 billion) on US goods, as well as imposing tariffs on US -made cars. General Motors is disabling one of its mounting factories in Canada and announced on Friday that it is cutting one shift into another, citing commercial tensions. “We are in a crisis,” said Carry, mentioning GM’s decision and adding that “unspecified consequences” await companies that reduce production.
Carney and Trump first talked by telephone on March 28, two weeks after the former central banker replaces Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister. During the election campaign, Carry promised to strengthen Canada’s business relations with Europe and Asia, although geography and history make almost impossible to detach from the US.
“We surpassed the shock of American betrayal,” Carry said in his victory speech at dawn on Tuesday. “But we should never forget the lessons.”

In a movement that may aim to emphasize Canada’s sovereignty, Carry said he asked King Charles III, head of state of Canada, to make the throne’s speech at the opening of Parliament on May 27. The last time a monarch opened Parliament in Canada was Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.
