Have you discovered cracks on the walls or tiles? You don’t have to panic right away. We will reveal the real causes and advise you when the problem is serious and when you can solve it even without expensive repairs.

Cracks on the walls and tiles can cause concern for each property owner. They appear not only in older buildings, but surprisingly often in new buildings or freshly renovated areas. Fortunately, this is not always a serious design problem. Let’s look at the most common causes and solutions together.

Why do the tiles burst? These mistakes make almost everyone

Natural wall tension is one of the most common causes. Buildings “work” and gradually settling, causing minimal design movements. As a result, the tiles can crack or fall off. However, this problem usually concerns poorly glued tiles without the right dilatation joints.

Other common causes include reconstruction errors, incorrectly used glue or too thin mortar layer. The humidity in the room also plays an important role. In bathrooms and kitchens, where there are significant changes in temperature and humidity, the tiles can crack, rupture and fall off over time.

The quality of the materials plays an equally important role. Cheap adhesives, poor quality mortar and lower quality tiles are easier to damage. Problems can also cause poorly prepared substrate, uneven walls, a crooked mortar layer, missing dilatation joints, as well as failure to comply with the time needed to cure mortar and adhesive.

Cracks on the walls: when to go to panic and when to stay calm

It is crucial to determine the cause of the cracks. First, it is necessary to distinguish between the crack and the lynx. In most cases it is only a surface change, which does not interfere with the structure of the wall and is only on the plaster layer. Such features may occur over time, for example, when the plaster dries or peel off when a tension occurs in the wall or when moisture appears in the room.

These surface cracks can be relatively easy to remove, although simple cartridge may not solve the problem permanently. It is worse when cracks interfere with the construction of the building, for example in the joints between the wall and the ceiling or the floor.

Why do the walls burst? The causes can be several and often combine:

  • Incorrect connection of the wall to a building skeleton of a building, ceiling or reinforced concrete beam
  • Uneven settling of the building
  • Too strong ceiling pressure
  • Surface vibrations such as real estate near highways, busy roads or airports

If you notice a crack, make sure it only applies to the plaster layer. Also watch its size. If, after thoroughly cleansing the wall, re -application of penetration, mortar and a terrible crack reappears or increases over time, it will be necessary to call an expert to assess the technical condition of the building. It may be shown that the foundations will need to be strengthened.
