Decree signed by Mayor Eduardo Paes highlights the 100 years of the company and the role played to strengthen Brazilian culture
The Globo Group was declared Intangible Heritage of Rio de Janeiro. A decree signed by the mayor of the state capital, (PSD), was published in the city hall on Wednesday (30.abr.2025).
The decree (read the full below) cites the 100th anniversary of Globo’s foundation, which will be celebrated on July 29, and the consequent transformation of the communication group into “Largest Conglomerate of Media and Communication in Brazil”.
The text states that Grupo Globo “played a key role in promoting and strengthening Brazilian culture, the diffusion of information and the formation of public opinion, impacting generations of citizens”.
Paes also highlights the founding of TV Globoin 1965, that, according to the decree, “revolutionized Brazilian television with productions and innovations in journalism, sports, entertainment and television drama, being recognized worldwide for its quality and reach”.
The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Globo Group, the 60th anniversary of TV Globo and also the 10 years of Globoplaystation streaming system.

“Rio Decree No. 56021 of April 29, 2025
“Declares cultural heritage of an immaterial nature in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro the“ Globo Group ”.
“The mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the use of the attributions conferred upon him by the legislation in force and considering that communication is an essential element in the construction of the cultural identity of a people, reflecting and shaping their values, traditions and history;
“Considering that Grupo Globo, founded on July 29, 1925 by journalist Irineu Marinho, in Rio de Janeiro, consolidated itself as the largest conglomerate of media and communication in Brazil, with national and international performance, and that, throughout a century, played a fundamental role in the promotion and strengthening of Brazilian culture, the diffusion of information and the formation of public opinion, impacting generations of citizens;
“Considering that the newspaper O Globo, the group’s initial landmark, still headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, became one of the main press vehicles in the country, contributing significantly to Brazilian journalism, national democratic pillar;
“Considering that TV Globo, inaugurated on April 26, 1965, in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, also in Rio de Janeiro, revolutionized Brazilian television with productions and innovations in journalism, sports, entertainment and television drama, being recognized worldwide for its quality and reach;
“Considering that Grupo Globo has been a pioneer in technological innovation, since the introduction of color transmission to digitization and also in the development and construction of one of the largest studio complexes in Latin America, Globo Studios in Rio de Janeiro;
“Considering that, in 2025, the 100th anniversary of the Globo Group is celebrated, TV Globo’s 60th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of Globoplay, historical Marcos that reinforces its relevance and contribution to Rio de Janeiro and Brazilian society;
“Considering the need to preserve and recognize institutions that play a significant role in the memory and cultural identity of the city of Rio de Janeiro,
“Decrees:
“Art. 1 The Cultural Heritage of an immaterial nature is declared in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro the“ Globo Group ”, in recognition of its historical, cultural and social contribution to the city and to Brazil.
“Art. 2 The Municipal Executive Body of Cultural Heritage Protection shall enroll the“ Globo Group ”as an immaterial cultural good, promoting the actions necessary for its safeguard and valorization.
