The Ministry of Health has expanded the offer of Hepatitis A vaccination. From now on, the doses will also be indicated for users of PREP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), which is drug prophylaxis used for HIV prevention.
The initiative aims to contain outbreaks in the adult population and meets a change in the epidemiological profile of the disease.
The goal is to vaccinate 80% of all people who use PREP, who currently total over 120,700 users in the SUS (Unified Health System). Immunization will be made with two doses, with a 6 -month interval, ensuring lasting protection.
To receive the doses, it is necessary to present the prescription of the PREP. The venue for vaccination will be informed by the reference services where each one is attended to receive the medicines.
Hepatitis A is an inflammation in the liver caused by a viral infection, which can result in complications. The disease tends to have more severity in adults than in children. Although the main transmission of the virus is fecal-oral, the WHO (World Health Organization) reported, in 2016, an increase in the number of cases, even in countries with low disease endemicity related to sexual practices. WHO indicates the vaccine as a prevention strategy.
