The vice president of the Portuguese Association of Civil Protection Technicians explains what happened this morning in Beja and caused damage to various infrastructure, roofs and telecommunications network.
The morning of this Friday was startled. In Beja, a tornado ripped trees, roofs of houses flew but there is no record of victims or injured. The damage is still being evaluated but there is already explanation for the meteorological phenomenon that has passed.
Speaking to SIC Notícias, Jorge Silva, vice president of the Portuguese Association of Civil Protection Technicians, explained that the hot Thursday that was registered in the region and the sudden rain this dawn are at the origin of the tornado.
“In the morning around 6:40 am, there was a very intense rain and yesterday we had a hot day. (…) The temperature of the earth was making the natural cooling with the upward air” but the “very sudden rain” this dawn “created a difference in variation potentials that led to this air that was in the rising phase had designed very sharply and made this cycle of air very quickly around the tornado, that is what the phenomenon, the phenomenon, is the event ”.
The Mayor of Beja, Paulo Arsénio, indicates, quoted by the agency Lusa, that this Meteorological phenomenon has mainly reached Porto Peles, a village of the county with 150 inhabitants and about 10 kilometers from the city.
“It will have a duration of a few seconds. At 8:15, it crossed the small population of Porto Peles and caused some destruction, without having to register, fortunately, neither injured nor population displaced,” he said on the sidelines of a visit to the Ovibeja Agricultural Fair.
Paulo Arsénio, who has already moved to the scene to find out the damage, reported that they were “seriously damaged” warehouses and a house roofs, but in the unshared part and the existence of “many fallen trees” and also a wall.
“There were many zinc plates and tree legs through the air, which then caused havings in blinds and marchiers “of houses”mentioned, noting that, at least one car also had more significant damage.
For now, he highlighted the mayor, there is an afterwards after the aftermath, pointing out that the damage caused by bad weather will be done “in the next few hours, maybe, until the coming days.”
Also In the municipality of Beja, in a rural area near Baleizão, added the mayor, “will have been torn”, with the wind, “about a hundred olive trees”.
Contacted by Lusa, the sub-regional emergency and civil protection command of Baixo Alentejo indicated that in the relief operations were involved the firefighters of Beja and GNR, with a total of seven operatives supported by four vehicles.
