Deniz Yücel, born in 1973 in southern Hesse, has experienced the increasing harassment of journalism in Turkey. In 2017 he was in custody for a year because of the allegation of the “terrorist propaganda”. In 2018 he was released after extensive diplomatic efforts and was able to return to Germany. In 2020 he was sentenced to a prison sentence in the absence. He can therefore no longer travel to Turkey. For the conversation we meet in a café at the notorious Kottbusser Tor in Berlin. Yücel has a hearty breakfast, in the end the waiter brings a Turkish dessert – a greeting from the house to the well -known guest.
