With massive support from the local community, a region that houses the base of Spacex becomes officially a city; environmentalists warn of impacts on the ecosystem
Southern Texas residents gave Elon Musk a significant victory by approving, with a large majority, the creation of the city independent of Starbase. According to data released by the County Electoral Site, the incorporation proposal was approved by 212 votes against 6, reflecting the strong support of the small community near Spacex’s release base.
The 283 residents of Boca Chica Village, an unlick area of Cameron County known as Starbase and headquarters, voted on Saturday (3.MAI.2025). Only 143 votes were necessary for the measure to be approved.
Spacex test and launch vice president of Texas, Bobby Peden, is the only candidate for mayor. The 36 -year -old engineer has been working at Musk’s company since 2013. The area near Boca Chica beach is almost fully owned by Spacex, which operates in a small piece of land near the Mexican border since 2012.
Musk celebrated the vote in an X at the X on Saturday night: “Starbase, Texas, now it’s a real city!”he wrote. Shortly after the vote, an X account for the new city was created.
“Becoming a city will help us continue building the best possible community for men and women who build the future of humanity’s place in space”,, which was replaced by the official Spacex account.
Over the past 7 years, Spacex has completely reshaped the region of Boca Chica, which was once a quiet retirees community. The site has become a strategic center for the development of Starship – the rocket that Elon Musk plans to use in his plan to colonize Mars.
Environmental defenders, such as South Texas Environmental Justice Network, warned about the damage to the ecosystem. “Spacex, under the leadership of Elon Musk, is contributing to environmental destruction: polluting water sources, burning more than sixty acres of habitat and putting wildlife in danger with its rocket releases.”said the organization in a recent statement.
