In the 89th place – and last among the countries of the European Union – Greece is in freedom of the press, as ranked by the unpaid borders (RSF).
The news is extremely worrying, with Greece even under African and Latin American countries.
The Freedom of Freedom 2025 and the relevant report by no borders (RSF) describe a strong deterioration of the freedom of the world worldwide, with journalists and media facing difficult economic conditions.
For the first time, the RSF described the global state of freedom of the press as “difficult”, noting that after several years of decline, conditions for journalism are now evaluated as “bad” in the world’s half countries and the average score of all evaluated countries has fallen to 55, in a new low.
The global type of freedom of the press is determined by five main individual indicators (journalists’ security, social context, legal framework, political environment, economic situation).
Of these five main components, the greatest deterioration of the global score concerns the indicator of the financial situation.
The main threats
Physical attacks on journalists are the most obvious violations of press freedom, economic pressure – such as pressures by advertisers or financiers, and limiting public funding – is also a major problem and is “more insidious”.
Of the five main indicators used by the RSF to determine the ranking in the freedom of the press, the index that measures the economic conditions of journalism is at the lowest level of history.
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, David Walmsley, editor -in -chief of Canadian Globe and Mail, called on the media to “double their efforts to support all the journalists and editors who are in retaliation”.
The winners and the losers
At the top of the list of the world rankings are the following countries: Norway, Estonia, the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland. Dennal, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland and the Czech Republic are completed in the tenth.
The last ten places on the list are Russia, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, China, North Korea and Eritrea.
The padlocks
Due to the financial difficulty, the media closes in 1/3 of countries worldwide. Thirty -four countries stand out for mass padlocks in the media. These include Nicaragua (172nd, 9 seats), Belarus (166th), Iran (176th), Myanmar (169th), Sudan (156th), Azerbaijan (167th) and Afghanistan (175th).
Even countries with relatively high ranking and strong freedom of the press face challenges in funding and independence, such as New Zealand (16th) and South Africa (27th).
In Gaza the situation is hopeless. The Israeli army imposed a complete blockade for over 18 months on the Gaza Strip and killed almost 200 journalists. In chaos, Haiti, due to the political instability that has sinks the media economy.
In the US the media are strangled
Journalists in the US are operating in an increasingly hostile environment, as shown by the fall, by 28 positions in the social index. The US is ranked in 2025 in 57th place of freedom of the press, two positions lower than last year.
The situation seems to have deteriorated by Donadle Trump’s second term, with constant press manipulation attempts through false financial pretexts. This ended the funding of the USA Service for World Media (USAGM), a development that has influenced many news networks -such as Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
In addition, cutting funding to the USA International Development Service (USAID) has led hundreds of news agencies internationally to a critical financial situation.
‘Coordinated attack’
Referring to the rapidly changing state of press freedom in the US, Marty Baron, a former editor -in -chief of the Washington Post, warned that “a coordinated attack is already underway” in Donald Trump’s America.
“Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia and Voice of America have closed. Congress is abolishing public media funding such as NPR and PBS, “he said in an interview with Mattheus Mazinski of Polish Gazeta Wyborcza.
“And then it’s the case of the Associated Press. This historic agency has been completely cut off by the White House simply because it used the internationally accepted Mexican Gulf, instead of the Trump Gulf of America. Trump has also taken control of which journalists have access to him. In the past, this was the responsibility of the White House Association. Now, Trump decides who can ask questions. Thus, Trump, as president, dictates the language and limits the issues. And as an individual, he puts pressure on the media through lawsuits, “he said.
