Experts warn of the risks associated with the lack of proper maintenance and the low renewal of equipment

The number of people rescued by the State of São Paulo after being arrested 11.5% in 2024. There were 770 calls last year, compared to 685 in 2023. The risk remains high: only in the first three months of 2025, another 187 occurrences have already been recorded. In addition, more than 40 people died in elevator accidents in Brazil in 2024, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Elevator Companies.

Experts warn of the risks associated with the lack of proper maintenance and low renewal of equipment, especially in large centers such as the state capital, where there are about 100,000 elevators in operation. “Condominiums often choose cheaper solutions, neglecting the exchange of pieces and hiring specialized services, which raises the risk of serious failures,” explains Carlos Eduardo Santos, expert in the sector.

Concern about elevator security will be one of the main topics of Expo Elevator 2025, the largest sector event in Latin America, which takes place from May 6 to 8 at the Pro Magno Event Center in São Paulo. The fair will bring together more than 100 exhibitors from various countries and will present innovations that promise to reduce accidents, such as the virtual elevator technician – a system that uses artificial intelligence and internet of things to monitor and diagnose failures, preventing incidents before they occur.

In addition to the exhibition, debates will address the causes of accidents and measures to improve safety. On May 7, experts participate in the panel “Accidents with Elevators in Brazil”, analyzing project failures, calculation errors and recurring maintenance problems. “The lack of qualified professionals and the use of inappropriate pieces are still serious problems in the country,” reinforces Santos.

The elevator sector, which moves more than $ 10 billion per year, also bets on growth with the warming of the real estate market. However, experts warn that technological advancement needs to be accompanied by technical responsibility and rigor in maintenance to avoid tragedies.

Among the highlights is the virtual elevator technician, a system that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor and diagnose remote failures. Technology anticipates problems and drastically reduces the risk of accidents, allowing corrective actions even before technicians’ arrival. Another innovation is the integration of climate sensors that can predict flooding and flooding in the regions of buildings, increasing security in crisis situations.

Wittur Group, one of the industry’s global leaders, will feature new glass panoramic gates for high standard elevators designed to increase brightness and value internal environments. Infolev will highlight command boards that promise to reduce the consumption of electricity in condominiums by up to 40%, an especially relevant solution in the face of increased energy costs.

The fair will also feature the Intelligent Building Connection event, which will bring debates on building automation and energy management. Confirmed speakers include Chao Lung Wen, a reference in Telemedicine and Technological Innovation, and Cesar Ribeiro, a specialist in Energy Efficiency.

In addition to the exhibition and releases, a series of debate panels will address technical and security topics. On May 7, experts participate in the panel “Accidents with Elevators in Brazil”, analyzing project failures, calculation errors and recurring maintenance problems. “The lack of qualified professionals and the use of inappropriate pieces are still serious problems in the country,” reinforces Santos.

Another topic in evidence will be the life of elevators, with debates on preventive maintenance practices and how new technologies can prolong the durability of equipment. The fair will also highlight the growth of female participation in the sector, which was historically dominated by men, and the growing need for modernization: according to market estimates, about 60% of elevators in use today need update.
