Making a movie has always been expensive, but making a movie outside the US will now be even more expensive. Actors, actresses, production or directors of the American entertainment industry barely recover from the global pandemic, strikes of Hollywood fields and fires in Los Angeles, and will be killed with consequences if they make a movie outside the United States.
Donald Trump continues the commercial war that he unleashed and announced that it will approve 100 percent duties for all films that will not be produced on home.
Many of whose work on the film feeds on what it actually means.
“Threat to National Security”
According to Trump, the entertainment industry “dies with rapid death” and more films need to be made in America. On the social network he published that Hollywood and other areas “are devastated” as a result of “targeted efforts of other countries”, which he believes poses a “threat to national security”.
It is not clear from the statements that Donald Trump has posted to whom and what the duties will apply to. The President did not specify whether the duty will also concern films only partially made abroad. Nor is the way in which duties will be calculated, and how the films will be screened in the cinema and streaming platforms such as Netflix.
Many of the recent big films of American studies have been filmed outside the US, including Deadpool & Wolverine, Wicked and Gladiator II.
The only thing that film companies currently know is the President’s opinion who claims that foreign films are, among other things, propaganda sources. “We want the movies to be shot again in America!” wrote on the Truth Social platform.
Why are filmmakers moving further from the US?
According to Prior Data, the total film and television production in the US fell by 26 % last year compared to 2021. Film critic Eric Deggans from the NPR warned that duties – if introduced – could be even more damaged by the film industry.
Many filmmakers are moving to the United Kingdom or Canada, for example, not only for engaging sites and its surroundings, but especially for tax incentives. The cost of making a film in California, according to the founder of the European Network of Vue, Timothy Richards has increased significantly over the past decades.
At the same time, he adds that the United Kingdom has one of the finest and most experienced filmmakers and moving films to Britain are therefore only partly economically. “The devil is hiding in details,” he adds.
However, the President is throwing the guilt at the governor of California Gavin Newsom. “If they are not willing to make films in the United States, then we should have duty on the movies that come here. And not only that – the governments of those countries give them big money,” the White House chief said.
To the question of the server Deadline Governia Gavin Newsom’s Governor’s office replied that the President did not have the power to introduce such duties.
“We believe that, according to the International Economic Economic Emergency Emergency Powers Act, it does not have the power to introduce duties, as duties are not listed as a possible means under this Act,” said Bob Salladay, main communication advisor.
What are the duties and why Trump uses them?
Before he re -elected Trump as president, he appointed three film actors – Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone – for special envoys in charge of Hollywood business support. Hollywood himself described as a “great but problematic place”.
Since his return to the White House, he has been involved in customs policy and has been facing taxes on goods imported from abroad. He claims to do so to support US manufacturers and protect jobs. The result, however, is a commercial war that causes chaos in the world and causes the rise in the price of goods.
