Iran introduces camera supervision to control hijab, women without hair covering receive warnings via SMS.

Iran will monitor the compliance of the Hijab’s Mandatory Hijab Act with camera surveillance, local media reported on Tuesday. Women without mandatory hair cover in public are reportedly warned through text messages. TASR informs about this based on the DPA and Iran Insight portal.

According to the Iranian media, camera monitoring concerns several cities, including Tehran, Isfahan or Shiraza. SMS messages then reportedly sends the headquarters for the ordering of good and prohibiting evil. Their legacy is austere – “postpone hijabs in public and you can face legal prosecution,” Iran Insight said.

Tactics

Some women in Tehran, according to DPA sources, said they started to wear sunglasses so that their cameras could not accurately identify them.

Many women in large cities in Iran ignore the strict Islamic rules of dressing, either as a form of protest or as a manifestation of self -determination. The impulse for this development was the nationwide protests in autumn 2022 under the slogan “woman, life, freedom”.

Death Mahsy Amíníová

They were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amíníová in police custody. She was detained on the street by a moral police for an alleged violation of a strict code of dressing for women. Conservative leaders in the country consider disrespecting the rules as a provocation.

Iran has introduced a similar measure in 2023, and the police have been using traffic cameras to monitor hijab. Registered vehicle owners receive automatic alerts if women in the car did not have hijab covered hair. If they receive three warnings, they will entertain the car for four weeks, and tens of thousands of cars were reportedly confiscated. However, several citizens state that the data from the cameras were not true, writes Iran Insight.
