Cardinal José Cobo Cano, Archbishop of Madrid, 59, is one of the Spanish voters in the conclave who will choose the successor of Pope Francis and starts this Wednesday, May 7. Cobo, which is counted among the youngest of the Cardenalicio College, has starred in a national and Vatican meteoric career since Francisco appointed him Archbishop of Madrid on June 12, 2023. Shortly after, on September 30, 2023, he was created Cardinal and had previously been appointed member of the Dicasteria for the bishops. On March 1, 2024, he was appointed ordinary for the faithful of the eastern rite in Spain. In addition, that same year he was elected vice president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE). Born on September 20, 1965 in Sabiote (Jaén), but based in Madrid from a young age, José Cobo studied civil law at the Complutense University, graduating in 1988. That same year he entered the Conciliar Seminary of the Immaculate and San Dámaso. He was ordained a priest on April 23, 1994.
