Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) received at his residence in Brasilia, the senior counselor for western hemisphere of the US State Department, Ricardo Pita, last Monday (5). The meeting, which was also attended by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), lasted about two hours and addressed topics such as regional security and democracy.
In a publication on the X (former Twitter), licensed deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) said Bolsonaro highlighted, during the meeting, “urgent threats to Brazilian democracy and US interests in the region.” According to Eduardo, Pita expressed support to the former president and pledged to take Bolsonaro’s message back to Washington.
The former president also commented on the meeting in an interview with Westthis Tuesday (6), noting that the conversation was “quite reserved” and that there was a demonstration of “American interest in Brazil”. “Me, my son Flavio and a few more people. A very reserved conversation, there is an American interest in Brazil,” Bolsonaro said.
Ricardo Pita’s visit is part of the agenda of one, the integral coordinator of sanctions from the United States government. The entourage has commitments in Brasilia aimed at combating organized crime, including discussions about terrorism and drug trafficking. The State Department not officially detailed the meetings that will be held.
Behind the scenes, it is speculated that the group can deal with topics related to the Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the target of criticism of former President Bolsonaro and his allies. However, there is no official confirmation that the subject will be addressed.
