If the Senate approves the bill from 513 to 531 the number of federal deputies, the House will have increased from 205 to 531 chairs over 137 years. The new composition would represent an increase of 160.29% in the number of deputies since 1890.

The House approved this Thursday (6.MAI.2025) the PLP. The text is a decision of the Supreme Court (STF), which determined Congress to create a law to redistribute the number of deputies according to the population of the states until June 30, 2025.

According to IBGE, in 1890 the Brazilian population of 14.3 million inhabitants. That year, the House had 205 deputies. Today, with 203 million inhabitants, there are 513.

The Constitution determines that each unit of the Federation has at least 8 and a maximum of 70 deputies, without fixing a total. The definition of the number of chairs is done by Congress, provided that the population proportionality is respected.

The project stipulates redistribution: states that have lost population will have fewer chairs, and those that have grown more. If approved by the Senate also, the new model will be valid for the 2026 elections and will take effect in the 2027 legislature.

IMPACT

According to the Board of Directors of the House, each new chair costs about R $ 3.6 million per year. With 18 more vacancies, the annual impact would be R $ 64.6 million. The rapporteur of the project, deputy (União Brasil-PB), states that the budget of the house has additional expenses.
