The first day of the conclave concluded with Black Fumata, a sign that the cardinals did not reach an agreement to choose the successor of Pope Francis. The wait in the Plaza de San Pedro, under the spring sun, brought together some 30,000 people pending the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
“I tired a lot, but I was convinced that they would choose it,” said Stefania, a Roman who waited more than three hours. Others, such as Juan, an Argentine tourist, described the experience as “historical, although exhausting.”
The black smoking appeared at 9:00 p.m., after rumors that indicated a possible dining pause. Many had already left, but others arrived just in time to witness the moment.
This Thursday will continue the conclave. Outside, the square will be filled again with faithful and curious waiting for the Blanca smoking.
