Measure responds to negotiations with the US, aiming at balance in tariffs on European products
The EU (European Union) is evaluating the possibility of imposing fares on Boeing jets. This action is considered a response to commercial negotiations with the United States, as reported by the Financial Times on Tuesday (6.mai.2025).
The European Commission, which manages the EU trade policy, has in view of civil aircraft among US products, whose annual imports total approximately US $ 100 billion for possible tariffs.
For the implementation of these rates, the consent of most EU member states is required. Tariffs would be applied if there is not enough progress in negotiations with the US to reduce European products. This scenario highlights the complexity of trade relations between two of the largest global economies, which seek to balance national interests with the maintenance of stable international trade.
Current negotiations are an opportunity for both parties to reduce accumulated tensions over the years. SEFCOVIC, the EU chief of commerce, said the European Union will not accept a tariff agreement considered unfair to the United States.
The situation is delicate for European airlines, which have hundreds of Boeing ordered jets. Tariff application could significantly increase the costs of these aircraft, affecting airlines and aerospace industry. The EU seeks to ensure equality in the rates between Boeing and Airbus, in response to the tariffs imposed by Washington.
In a previous tariff dispute between 2020 and 2021, European and American aerospace companies called for the suspension of all tariffs. This precedent indicates the possibility of dialogue and negotiation to avoid climbing in the commercial conflict.
Currently, the EU faces US import tariffs of 25% on steel, aluminum and cars, as well as tariffs “Reciprocas” from 10% to almost all other products, including aircraft. These can rise to 20% after the end of a 90 -day break granted by US President Donald Trump, which ends on July 8.
