The Democratic Labor Party (PDT) announced its, after a meeting marked by tension and criticism of the relationship with the Planalto Palace. According to the leader of the acronym in the House, Mário Heringer (MG), the decision was unanimous among party deputies and reflects an accumulation of dissatisfaction over the last two years.

“In fact, what happened to us was a sum of things during this time, these two years and little, that we have been complaining, saying, news, giving news, including the press, the bad relations that occurred between the government and the PDT bench in the House,” Heringer said in an interview with CNN Brazil.

The PDT decision occurs a few days after, amid the scandal of fraud in undue discounts on the benefits of the INSS. Lupi attended the meeting that sealed the break and presented his point of view, but the departure was decided unanimously.

Relationship between PDT and government was “very bad,” says party leader in the House

Heringer emphasized that the party will not automatically adhere to the opposition, opting for an independent stance: “We opted for independence by a unique strategy, which is exactly not to be confused with the opposition, because we are not in opposition, we are not the opposition that is there.”

With 17 deputies, the PDT was part of the allied base of the government since the beginning of the term of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT). The acronym supported the petista in the second round of the 2022 election, after the bad performance of his own candidacy, led by Ciro Gomes.

The rupture with the government occurs in a moment of growing tension at the allied base and raises doubts about the future of Lula’s governability in the House of Representatives.
