A survey conducted six months ago shows that 60% of the Russians fears that Russian President Vladimir Putin dies without appointing a successor, according to political scientist Vadim Denisenko.
“We conducted a sociological study on this same issue about six months ago. I don’t think the figures are different globally today.” At that time, almost 60% of the Russians said they were afraid that Putin was not elected president and not appointing a successor. “This is really one of the greatest fears of the Russians,” Denisenko said.
The political scientist said that this situation is “traditional history”, because during the 25 years of Putin in power, a generation of people who do not understand that something else could happen grew.
“Let us remember the death of Brézhnev, which many probably remember. You can remember stories about Stalin’s death. The feeling that an era is happening, stability, certain frames in which you live, and then, the unknown,” Denisenko said.
And he stressed that in Russia there is a cult of Putin’s personality, based, in particular, on the belief that “Putin will be more cunning than all.” “After Putin’s death we entered an unknown territory, where there could be someone good and there could be someone much worse,” he concluded.
Putin, 72, said he always thinks of his possible successor, but will be responsible for the Russians to choose who is the candidate worthy of his trust, as they show fragments of a documentary that was broadcast on Sunday on Russian television.
“A person who does not have the confidence of the people will not have opportunities to do something serious. It is a matter of principles. Therefore, when I think about the issue of a successor, and I think of that constantly, I think a person should arise, and better several, that this trust on the part of the citizens can be won,” he said in the documentary, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of his first investiture as head of the State.
