Sign indicates that none of the candidates reached the two thirds required of the cardinal votes to be elected
A black smoke was seen leaving the chimney of the Sistine Chapel on the morning of Thursday (8), signaling that the cardinals have not yet reached an agreement to elect the new . The dark color of smoke indicates that none of the candidates reached the two thirds necessary – ie 89 votes – to be chosen.
However, there is still the possibility of new signs today: at 12:30 pm, if there is a decision and the smoke is white, and at 14h, in case of new vote without consensus (Brasilia hours). The thousands of people gathered at noon (7h00 Brasília) in St. Peter’s Square received with applause and disappointment the second black smoke of Conclave, after the first vote on Wednesday. Cardinals should vote again in the afternoon to choose Francisco’s successor.
