Leite says that Rio Grande do Sul is still recovering, a year after flooding

A year after the historical floods that razed Rio Grande do Sul, the state still suffers the consequences of climate catastrophe. During the flooding period, 95 gaucho municipalities entered calamity and more than 300 in an emergency. Throughout the state, 600,000 people were away from home and 80,000 people in shelters.

In the InfoMoney interview program, the state governor, Eduardo Leite, said that “it was a dramatic moment for the gauchos. We suffered a lot from lives, with people who are still missing, and, of course, all the cities that have been impacted.”

According to state Civil Defense data, 184 people died of the tragedy and 25 are missing.

At the head of the state government, Eduardo Leite had to assume the mission of recovering the state. “It is a disaster of proportions never before seen in Brazil, in this dimension of impact of municipalities, companies, homes affected.“ At least 94% of road blocks have already been resolved. Rio Grande Plan

According to Leite, the good news is that the state is surpassing and has a plan, which is the Rio Grande plan, with a series of initiatives that were established for reconstruction.

After the tragedy, the state began to invest in the planning of flood protection systems and the expansion of response capacity to preserve lives. The governor has promised a more robust prevention system that can become an example for Brazil, in terms of diagnostic system structure and preparation for any new disasters.
