President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) compared the speech of US President Donald Trump to ideals anarchist, stating that the American leader defends a “society without institutions”.

The statement was made in an interview with the magazine The New Yorkerpublished on Thursday (8), and included criticism of the governance model promoted by Trump, who would be distancing himself from the democratic principles established after World War II.

“It was almost the same kind of discourse that anarchists made in Italy and Brazil at the beginning of the century, crying out for a society without institutions, a society where the empire of capital reigns,” said Lula. The petista made the association in mentioning Trump’s statements in the US Congress, where, according to him, “Republicans applauded any nonsense he said.”

Anarchism is a political ideology that preaches the abolition of the state and all forms of coercive authority. In tracing the parallel between Trump and the anarchist movement, Lula criticized what he considers a devaluation of institutions and multilateralism – concepts that were fundamental in the global order established after World War II.

Criticism of US foreign policy and war in Ukraine

In the same interview, Lula criticized Joe Biden’s previous administration approach to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, accusing the US government of prioritizing the destruction of Russian forces rather than seeking peace. “They were more concerned with destroying Russian troops than to achieve peace,” said the petista.

The Brazilian president is in Russia to participate in the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which celebrates the victory of allies against Nazi Germany in World War II. The visit is an attempt by Lula to reposition himself as a mediator in international conflicts, including the Russian-Ucranian conflict.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Lula is no longer relevant to mediate the end of the war. In response, Lula mentioned that if peace is reached by Trump, he could win the Nobel Peace Prize.
