The Municipal Assembly (AM) of Faro approved unanimously on Tuesday the rectification of the Regulation of Fees of the Municipality, proposed by its President (PSD), but the PS, despite voting in favor, considers that there was a “legal atropla”.
Speaking to the Lusa Agency, the president of AM de Faro, Cristóvão Norte explained that the proposal provides for the replacement of the amounts charged last year and the return of those that were excessive to the citizens and companies that liquidated them.
Rectification imposes a transitional norm until December 31, 2026, “in which it is established that the application of the rate table cannot result in any increase in the amount of each rate by comparison with 2024,” he said.
“This decision results from the finding of errors and inaccuracies that put into question the meaning and scope of the regulation,” said the president of the PSD/Algarve, giving as an example the cases of subdivisions licensing in which increases “rising at 500%”.
For its part, the leader of the socialist bench at the Faro Municipal Assembly, Tatiana Homem de Gouveia, told Lusa that the approval of the proposal by the local agency was a “legal atropelo” because it should have been brought to AM by the City Council and not by the president of AM, Christopher Norte.
Tatiana Homem de Gouveia lamented that the president of AM had chosen to bring to votes a proposal for rectification to correct “a mistake created by Mr. Mayor and his executive [PSD]And has placed the PS before the “dilemma” of approving the measure to “not harm the citizens”, despite disagreeing with the way it was presented.
Also president of the PS council of the PS recalled that the proposal for initial regulation was approved in October, with the abstention of the PS, and was subject to a set of vicissitudes, with errors in the amounts provided for collection, which underwent the real estate investment in the municipality and even implied “300%increases” for the residents.
As the rectification proposal does not require public consultation, as with change proposals, the City Council should have first approved this proposal and then submit it to AM, which did not happen, regretted.
Asked about an eventual challenge to AM approval on Tuesday, the party leader dismissed this scenario, arguing that he would cause even more difficulties to the citizens.
Already Cristóvão Norte was pleased with the fact that the proposals of solution presented by them were unanimously approved.
“Citizens are protected, their needs and satisfied demands, their position safeguarded. It was a good day for Faro,” he concluded.
