FIFA President Gianni Infantino announces Brazil as host of the 2027 Women’s World Cup during the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok on May 17, 2024. The 74th FIFA Congress will take place in Bangkok, with the associations voting in a number of issues, including the confirmation of the nation or host nations of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

It announced it on Wednesday (7) the eight cities that will host the 2027 in Brazil-the first edition held in-under the dream of the selection of winning its first title, despite the announced absence of its queen ,. Brazil’s candidacy defeated a joint proposal from European countries during the FIFA Congress in May 2024. “From samba to frevo, from stunning beaches to cosmopolitan cities, the world will experience the energy, color and warmth that only Brazil can offer”, congratulated FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a video. “With your huge passion for football, 2027 will be really spectacular,” he added.

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will be the second to be played with 32 teams, a format inaugurated in the 2023 edition in Australia and New Zealand. Previously, there were 24 teams. United States and Germany are the biggest champions between the nine editions played since 1991, with four and two titles, respectively. Eight times champion of America and currently eighth place in the FIFA ranking, the Brazilian team is already guaranteed in the competition as a host country. The headquarters of the competition are:

  • São Paulo
  • Rio de Janeiro
  • Brasilia
  • Belo Horizonte
  • Porto Alegre
  • Salvador
  • Fortaleza
  • Recife

The stadiums of the announced cities, chosen from 12 proposals, have already been used in the 2014 Men’s World Cup, when Brazil, five -time champion and led by a young Neymar, was eliminated in the semifinals with a 7-1 historic rout against Germany. This will be the first time there will be specific South American qualifiers to classify to the World Cup from October. Until then, the region’s vacancies were defined according to performance in the Copa América.

While the men’s team has been going through a period of decline for a few years, the female reaches the World Cup with the popular impulse that their football has won in the country. By the late 1970s, women in Brazil were banned for decades of playing in soccer clubs, a practice that the law considered “incompatible with the conditions of its nature.” Even so, they continued to play in neighborhoods and communities until the ban was revoked near the end of the military dictatorship (1964–1985).

Today, Brazilian women’s football is the strongest in Latin America. In addition to attracting girls and adolescents in club base categories, it can fill stadiums in important matches, attracts millionaire sponsors and has professional status in the national championship. However, the investments of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the clubs, as well as the salaries of the players, are still far from the values practiced in men’s soccer.
