The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, is in the second term and manages one of the most indebted states in Brazil. His government renovated to wipe out expenses, but even so, the state still has a debt of more than $ 100 billion with the Union.
The governor bets on management results, which also faced one of last year’s biggest climate calamities, to put himself as a presidential candidate.
The challenge of managing the debt of Rio Grande do Sul was one of the themes of Infoomoney interviews with the governor. “When I took over, the state had an injunction, without paying the debt and yet delaying payments, wages, hospitals and everything else,” he said.
According to Leite, his government reduced the total expense with the payroll over the net current revenue to 60% and was increasing the payment to the union before the flood.
The governor complained in the interview that the Union did not anonist this amount – which will be paid – although it opened the interest. “The state will pay, with the correction of inflation, this amount that is now being invested in reconstruction actions,” he said. But milk insists that this was not an ideal solution.
In addition to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil has three other states that account for 70% of the debt to the Union: São Paulo – with the highest nominal value – Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

According to the governor, now, the Union has sanctioned Propag -a new debt payment program -which softens, but does not solve the problem. “Instead of paying $ 10 billion, in 2031, as we would pay in the current format of the contract, we will pay 7 billion,” he exemplifies.
The good news, according to milk, is that the state is recovering strongly. “Last year, Rio Grande do Sul grew 4.9%, more than Brazil’s growth, despite the floods. And in the first three months of this year, we were the third state in job creation in Brazil,” added the governor.
Leite said she was confident in the state’s future, which is in the course of Cero, even with the challenge. “There is a whole agenda of renovation of the public machine,” he says.
