Black smoke was, in a way, something expected in the face of the history of the conclaves. From 1903 here, only Pio 12, in 1939, was chosen on the second day in the morning, in the third voting session. Of the most recent, Joseph Ratzinger became Benedict 16 on the fourth vote, and Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Francis after the fifth session, both in the afternoon.
If there is one elected in the first attempt of this second round of Thursday (8), the faithful who are waiting in São Pedro Summer Square the white smoke. If there is no elected, no sign will be made to the public, and the second vote begins immediately. At the end of it, if there is no cardinal who gets two thirds of the votes, then the second black smoke of the day should leave the chaminy of the chapel.
The first day of voting had black smoke at 16h (21h), 3 hours and 14 minutes after the doors of the Sistine Chapel close, marking the beginning of the conclave.
In the 2005 conclave, the second day of voting had black smoke at 6:39 (11:39), indicating that the two morning sessions ended inconclusive. In the afternoon, in the 4th general vote, the white smoke came up. It was 12:50 (5:50 pm) on April 19th. Benedict 16 was the new Pope.
In 2013, the second day of Conclave began with black smoke almost at the same time 2005, at 6:40 am (10:40 am in Rome, as the spindle at that time of year was 4 hours more). That is, there was no consensus in the 2nd and 3rd votes.
In the afternoon, to the delight of the crowd that filled St. Peter’s Square, the white smoke left the chimney at 3:06 pm (19h06), in the 5th vote (ie, there was a 4th session without winner in the early afternoon).
