For the 13th time, the Republic celebrated its liberation from the Nazi dictatorship on May 8, 1945 on Thursday with a festival of joy in Vienna’s Heldenplatz. That was not always a matter of course. Before the Mauthausen Committee (MKÖ) organized this festival for the first time in 2013, German -national fraternities mourned on May 8th over 20 years at heroic place on their “dead memory”. MKÖ chairman Willi Mernyi recalled on Thursday evening that he had spoken a lot about death, war or racism in recent years, but this time wanted to talk about the topic of birth: he introduced two women and one man who were all born in Mauthausen in the last days of the war, “in a place where life was not worth anything”. They all celebrated their 80th birthday these days: Eva Clarke, Hana Berger-Moran and Mark Olsky.
