Deforestation grows 55% in the Amazon in April, says Institute

Survey of (National Institute for Space Research) released on Thursday (8.MAI.2025) shows that deforestation of the Amazon grew by 55% in April 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year.

The data is calculated based on the alerts issued for deter (real -time deforestation detection system).

In absolute values, there were 270 km² deforested in the Amazon in April. The record for the period was registered in 2022, when there were 1,026 km². This is the study presented by the Ministry of Environment (PDF – 4 MB).

Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva signaled that her team observes the data with caution. She indicated that public policies related to the subject should be thought.

“As this discharge was found in April, we have all the warning signs seeking to make adjustments to the actions taken on the plan”he stated in an interview with journalists at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia.

The deforested area from January to April 2025 was 672 km². It represents a slightly significant drop of 1% compared to the 681 km² accumulated within 2024.

The study also brought deforestation data to the cerrado:

  • April – 690 km² (annual high of 26%);
  • January to April – 1,970 km² (remains of 3%).
