Leão XIV assumes the papacy with strong speech on environmental protection, expanding the influence of the Catholic Church in the fight against the climate crisis
The world today accompanied the first public speech of the new leader of. Leo XIV, the first American pope of history, began his pontificate with a symbolic and powerful message: the defense of the environment will be one of the priorities of the Vatican. In his speech, he warned of the risks of the irresponsible use of technology and the destruction of nature, classifying the earth as “a gift from God that needs to be cared for with wisdom.” The speech was celebrated by environmentalists and climate scholars who see in the Pope figure a moral force capable of mobilizing millions. This new phase is actually a continuity. The was largely responsible for placing the environment on the global religious agenda, especially with the 2015 Encyclical Laudato Si – a milestone that united science, ethics and spirituality in defense of the “ordinary house”. In 2023, Francisco also reinforced his commitment to the document Laudate Deum, aimed at the urgency of climate actions.
Now, with, the church shows that it will not retreat in the face of the climate crisis. In times of advancement of environmental destruction, the message from one of the greatest spiritual leaders on the planet gains even more weight. The choice of this theme as a priority at the beginning of its pontificate is strategic: it signals the world that taking care of the environment is not only a political, but also moral, ethical and spiritual duty. Climate crisis requires committed leaders, capable of influencing hearts and public policies. By placing the environment at the center of his speech, the new Pope reminds us that protecting the planet is to protect life – in all its forms. And what faith and sustainability can – and should – walk together.
