The newly elected Pope Leo XIV gave clear signs that his pontificate will be marked by dialogue and conciliation, especially in a global scenario marked by conflict. This is the analysis of Friar Antonio Pinheiro, provincial prior of the Agostinian Order, in an interview with CNN Prime Time this Thursday (8).
According to Pinheiro, the balcony of São Pedro Basilica was revealing. “He began with an Easter greeting of the risen Jesus, ‘Peace be with you’, and repeated the word peace, including using interesting expressions, such as’ a disarmed and disarmed peace, which dialogues, which brings people closer,” said the Friar.
Welcome and mission
The new Pope also emphasized the welcoming role of the church, comparing it to the open arms of St. Peter’s Square. “The church must welcome everyone, everyone, without fear,” said Pinheiro, interpreting the words of the pontiff.
Leo XIV seems to continue the line of his predecessor, mentioning a “missionary church” and “output.” Frei stressed the repetition of the expression “walking together”, which refers to a sentence of: “For you, I am bishop, with you I am a Christian, let’s walk together.”
Conciliation and Symbolism
The name chosen by the new Pope, Leo XIV, is seen as a nod to the social doctrine of the Church, aligning with the approach of Francis. At the same time, his decision to use Mozeta (a small red cover) is interpreted as a conciliatory gesture toward the most conservative sectors of the church.
Pinheiro concludes that these elements indicate a pontificate that will seek to unite the church internally and convey a positive message to the world, especially in the face of current conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Gaza Strip.
