The effect may have a number of 34 vacancies of state deputies more than exist in the country if the decision of the (Federal Supreme Court) was respected to only the redistribution of chairs in the House according to the population of each unit of the Federation.

The proposal on Tuesday night (6) by and now the project follows for analysis of the federal. The change would be valid from the 2026 election.

The project aims to adapt the proportion of strength in the House between states according to the most up -to -date data of the 2022 census, and meets a determination of the Supreme Court to be done by June 30. Otherwise, the redistribution would be done by the (Superior Electoral Court).

Instead of redistributing the 513 existing vacancies, which would result in loss of seats for states such as Rio de Janeiro, Alagoas and Paraíba of the mayor, Hugo Motta (Republicans), the bill increases the total number of federal deputies.

This will cost at least R $ 64.6 million in salaries, parliamentary quota and cabinet money. The amount will be absorbed by the current budget of the House, according to the rapporteur of the matter, Deputy Damião Feliciano (União Brasil-PB).

There will also be, however, an increase in the number of state deputies, since the calculation of these vacancies is proportional to the number of federal deputies in each state.

The project approved by the Chamber creates, as a consequence, another 30 vacancies in the Amazonas Legislative Assemblies (6), Ceará (1), Goiás (1), Minas Gerais (1), Mato Grosso (6), Pará (4), Paraná (1), Rio Grande do Norte (6) and Santa Catarina (4) from 2026.

In addition, four chairs will no longer be cut, which would happen if there were redistribution of vacancies in the House of Representatives without the increase in the number of federal parliamentarians.

With this, the total number of state deputies, today of 1,059, will be 1,089. If the increase is not approved by the Senate, however, the total would fall to 1,055. The data are studied by Henrique Cardoso Oliveira, political scientist of the May 1 Foundation, linked to the Solidarity Party.

There is still no estimate of impact on state accounts, as the rapporteur in the House only calculated for the federal legislature and each establishes its own package of assistance from deputies, such as funds, aids and employees, as well as salaries themselves.

Each Legislative Assembly can establish the salary in up to 75% of the amount received by a federal deputy. Today, this ceiling is R $ 34,774.64. In salaries alone, therefore, the 34 extra state deputies can cost at least R $ 15.3 million per year.
