The records of Violence against indigenous women increased 258% Between 2014 and 2023. This is what an unprecedented survey of the collective genre and number released on Thursday (8) points out.

The vulnerability of this portion of the population is even more evident when it compares with the national average of 207% among Brazilians of all races in the same period.

The data were extracted from the Ministry of Health’s Notification Information System (Sinan) and concern three forms of violence: physical, psychological and sexual.

The highest discrepancy is precisely in the latter – the number jumped to 297% among indigenous women. Already among the Brazilian in general, the increase reached 188%. Sexual violence encompasses cases of harassment, rape, child pornography and sexual exploitation.

Another data that draws attention is the profile of victims of this type of abuse: 50% of them are girls under 14 years. In this age group, any act of sexual nature constitutes vulnerable rape, as the law establishes 14 years as the minimum age of consent. In total, 79% of victims are minors, versus 66% among the female population in general.

Among the aggressors, the companions and former companions stand out, whether to commit physical, psychological or sexual violence, a pattern that repeats itself throughout the Brazilian population.

A CNN contacted the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) to comment on the study. The space is still open.
