The Empire State Building building in New York was lit on Thursday with lights in gold and white in honor of the election of the first American Pope – former Cardinal of Chicago Robert Francis Prevost, who received the name of Leo XIV. The sixty -nine -year -old Cardinal, which has both American and Peruvian citizenship, elected after four rounds of voting only after 24 hours of the Conclave in the Sistine Chapel for a new head of the Catholic Church.

The iconic Empire State Building building in Manhattan, New York, often illuminates with lights of different colors as a symbol of solidarity on public holidays, significant anniversaries or celebrations, DPA notes. In gold and white, the building also shone in honor of the previous Pope Francis after his death at Easter Monday, April 21.

The new Pope also congratulated the leaders of Canada, Ireland and Britain

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulated the new Pope Lev XIV on Thursday, TASR reports according to AFP. “In times of deep global challenges, let his pontificate be marked by wisdom, the ability to distinguish, a deep commitment to the common good and dignity of all”Said the Canadian Prime Minister, who also added that he devoted to the newly elected head of the Catholic Church prayer.

According to DPA, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin joined the new Pope on Thursday. “The scenes of great joy and celebrations on St. Peter’s Square are a reflection of the hope and goodwill that people of Catholic faith from all over the world feel against the new Pope.”He said.

“I also congratulate the people of the United States, the countries with which Ireland has such a deep and strong relationship,” the Irish Prime Minister added in connection with the election of the first American Pope. Former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost comes from Chicago.

The election of the historically first American Pope was welcomed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday, who described it as a “significant moment”. “As the Pope Office of Pope Francis has shown, the Holy See has a special role in connecting people and nations in order to solve the main problems of our time, especially in terms of climate change, alleviation of poverty and support of peace and justice around the world,” said the British Prime Minister.
