Action aims to expand the protection of the population in the period of increasing cases of respiratory diseases; Minister Alexandre Padilha participated in an event in Brasilia

The Ministry of Health held this Saturday (10.MAI.2025) the day of the flu vaccination. The action mobilized the federal government, states and municipalities in the Northeast, Midwest, South and Southeast, focusing on the protection of the population before winter-a higher circulation of respiratory viruses.

The campaign’s goal is to vaccinate 90% of the target audience, equivalent to 81.6 million people. Children, elderly, pregnant women, health professionals, teachers, indigenous peoples, people with comorbidities and homelessness, among others.

The Minister of Health, participated in the mobilization in Guará, administrative region of Brasilia. Vaccinated members of the priority group and defended the importance of the campaign. “The vaccine will be available throughout the year in the basic health units. But D -Day is to draw the population’s attention and remember the importance of vaccinating before winter becomes more rigorous,” stated.

Padilha said respiratory diseases have increased in recent weeks. According to him, the influenza virus is today the main cause of deaths from respiratory infections in the country.

The Ministry of Health distributed more than 51.3 million doses of the flu vaccine to the states and the Federal District. Immunization is free and can be done in the UBSs and at extra points mounted by the municipalities.

The campaign began on April 7 and foresees the vaccination of 32 million elderly, 15 million children and 1.6 million pregnant women, as well as other priority groups. In the northern region, vaccination will start in the second half because of weather conditions. The most rainy period, known as “Amazonian winter”is what concentrates the largest viral circulation in the region.
