The initiative starts, as on that occasion, of civil society – syndicates, associations, foundations, intellectuals … – and as in Italy, it intends, according to the organizing committee, “to call confidence in the European and democratic system at a time when this great project of union and values is being besieged by clear authoritarian dyes, both by the new occupant of the White House and by the neo -Oil Gaza ”.
“Never Europe and social democracy has been as at risk in recent eighty years as today,” says the text of the call. “The response to that threat is the European Union: the process of greater social, economic and peaceful success that is known. A project that transcends the mere sum of the states that compose it, but that today needs a greater citizen commitment. The attitude and measures of Trump and the aggressiveness of Putin have accentuated that threat, which adds to the progress of the ultra -right. Model, ”they add.

More than fifty associations and groups have adhered to the manifesto, including the Europeanist group of the Madrid Athenaeum; the Pro Human Rights Association; +Democracy; the Circle of Fine Arts; the Spanish Refugee Aid Commission; the Alternative Foundation; Movement for Peace and Team Europe, in addition to the UGT and CC OO unions. Among the personalities attached are the writer Javier Cercas; the journalist Nativel Preciado and the deputies Hugo Martínez Abarca (more Madrid) and Isabel Andaluz (PSOE).
The “appeal by Europe” of the conveners directly appeals to those who “defend people and their diversity against all kinds of intolerances and violence, opposing any racist, xenophobic, macho, lgtbifobic or denialist tendency or denialist of climate change.” Also to those who believe it is necessary to protect the “social democracy model”: the rule of law and well -being, decent works and pensions; as well as an “international order based on rules and respect for justice and human rights, supporting the Palestinian people against the genocide to which they are being subjected.”
