A State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) revoked on Friday (9) the title of Doctor Honoris Cause granted to the General Emílio Garrastazu Médici, that ruled the country during the military dictatorship.

Unanimously, the institution’s university council understood that the former executive’s chief did not meet the criteria established in the regiment, such as a “Eminent, national or foreign personality, which has been uniquely highlighted by its contribution to culture, education or humanity.”

Médici was president between 1969 and 1974, a period marked by the repression of opposition movements to the government, the closure of the National Congress and the editing of institutional act number five (AI-5).

The military received the title – u – In your last year of office.

“The records of the National Truth Commission pointed out 180 cases of serious human rights violations in the period of Dictatorial Médici, but we are aware that the previous cast is already sufficient to ratify the proposition of withdrawal of the title Honoris Cause, based on the very argument of the legislation that institutes it”points out an excerpt from the report made by the Commission of the Truth and Memory Commission Luís Paulo da Cruz Nunes, which supported the decision of the Academy.

The commission was created in 2024 to investigate the crimes committed at the institution during the military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985.

UERJ dean, Gulnar Azevedo e Silva, expressed that the university is fulfilling its “repair role”.
