The United States and their European allies are completing a 30 -day ceasefire proposal in Ukraine, which, if rejected, will lead them to jointly impose new sanctions on Russia, a French diplomatic source said today.
The source said the proposal has not yet received the green light and will be processed during the weekend at the summit to be held in Ukraine.
“We have not fully completed the plan, but we hope we are in a moment of convergence,” the diplomatic source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
“What could happen in the coming hours and days is that there could be a ceasefire announcement either 30 days or in part, which is still being discussed.”
They are preparing sanction packages
The source said there are still discussions about whether a unilateral ceasefire would be announced or whether a short reaction time will be given to Russia, and that if it refuses, new US and European sanctions will be imposed in Moscow. The two sides are tuned to the sanctions packages.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Baro, who was in Washington last week to meet with US Secretary of State Marko Rubio, will follow President Emmanuel Macron in Kiev on Saturday, where there will be a hybrid meeting with the Hybridian.
The source said the political and technical talks between Europe and the US have been intensified since last week. Trump and Macron spoke on Thursday to discuss the ceasefire proposal.
“We felt in discussions with the Americans a certain irritation towards Russian stance, the lack of reaction and seriousness in its responses to what had been suggested earlier,” the source said. “The decision has been practically taken.”
Meanwhile, according to the Russian BBC service, German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz said in a press conference in Brussels that agreement is likely to exist in the next two days.
Mertz’s statement message
According to him, given the three -day ceasefire announced by Russia, there is a “high chance” to be extended for 30 days, and after that “talks about the peace agreement can begin”.
Mertz expressed hope that the terms would be accepted by the Russian side. “The ball is fully on Moscow’s side,” the German Chancellor said.
US President Donald Trump called on Thursday that there is a 30 -day cease -out of fire without terms between Russia and Ukraine, warning that Washington and its partners would impose further sanctions if the ceasefire is not adhered to.
Ukraine has expressed its readiness to accept the US proposal. Russia has declared a three -day ceasefire from 8 to 10 May, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
