Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the relations between Israel and Germany as excellent during a meeting with the new German Foreign Minister.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Israeli-German-German relations for “excellent” at a Sunday meeting with the new German Foreign Minister Johann Wadphul. Wadephul is in Israel on his first foreign trip in the office of German diplomacy chief, which he has taken on this week, TASR writes, according to DPA.
“We have a number of common interests, a number of values of shared challenges,” Netanyahu said during their meeting in Jerusalem. He also said that Israel and Germany have “excellent relationships” in which they want to continue. Wadephul thanked Netanyahu for acceptance. In front of journalists, they shook their hands with a smile.
Asks for a quick ceasefire
Wadephul arrived in Israel on Saturday. Meanwhile, he met with relatives of hostages whose Hamas Palestinian militant movement still retains in the Gaza Strip and, and in Sunday, he visited the Holocaust Holocaust Memorial to Jad Va-Šem in Jerusalem. On this occasion, he said that Germany was responsible to learn from the crimes of the Holocaust, remember the victims and honor the survivors.
Shortly before departure to Israel, the head of German diplomacy called for accelerated negotiations on the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He pointed out the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip. He also reiterated the support of Berlin for the two-state solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which, however, reminds DPA both Hamas and Netanyahu.
According to DPA, Wadephul’s relationship with Netanyahu is expected to be less tense than his predecessor in Annalena Baerback’s office, who criticized Israel for blocking humanitarian supplies to Gaza.
