Company says the Pernambuco capital is strategic for national and international connection; expect more Europeans to visit Brazil

It will start operating a route with 3 weekly flights connecting Recife (PE) to Madrid, capital of Spain. The company already operates 5 international routes from the Pernambuco capital. Currently, the flights are made with two scales: the 1st in São Paulo and the 2nd in Lisbon. The route has an average duration of 20h.

By the end of the year, Azul estimates that 176 flights will be made, considering matches and arrivals. The company expects the route to also attract European tourists to Recife, which is already the company’s 3rd largest operations destination.

“The new Recife-Madri route reinforces Azul’s strategy to expand its international mesh from regional hubs. Recife’s choice for this operation is due to its privileged geographical position and the adequate infrastructure for international flights, facilitating connections to passengers from all over Brazil.”said Beatriz Barbi, Air Mesh Planning Manager.

Azul plans, at first, distribute the initial flights from Recife to Madrid with 9 trips in June, 14 in July and 13 in August. The matches are scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, while the returns, scheduled for Wednesday, Friday and Monday of each week.

According to the company, the new route demonstrates the commitment to initiatives that boost regional development and international tourism.

“This is a significant opportunity to expand the international presence of Azul, meet customer demand and contribute to the economic and tourist growth of Pernambuco”, said Barbi.

The choice of Pernambuco capital to receive the route was strategic, according to Azul. Recife is the main connectivity point and the company’s largest hub in the Northeast. Guararapes International Airport operates 46, both domestic and international routes.

The city has become a national and international connection for other destinations in the Northeast, in the north and southern Brazil. In 2024, there were more than 29,000 takeoffs from Recife, totaling 3.8 million seats offered from the Pernambuco capital. In the first quarter of 2025, there were 787,655 customers transported from the Northeast Hub.
