Minister campaigns to choose Brazilian at ICDH

Macaé Evaristo, of human rights, officializes support to Fábio de Sá e Silva; There are currently no representatives of the country on the Inter -American Commission

The minister of Macaé Evaristo, declared that the candidacy of Fábio de Sá e Silva to (Inter -American Commission on Human Rights) is “especially relevant” for the defense of democracy in the Americas. Cidade, CIDH has 7 commissioners with 4 -year terms, a reelection allowed, and does not have Brazilians among its members.

“This year, this candidacy becomes especially relevant, since we are in an important time to defend democracy in the region. Professor Fábio de Sá e Silva has a brilliant career in human rights services,” declared Macaé Evaristo. The formal support to the Brazilian name was made on Monday (6.MAI.2025), during ceremony at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia.

The Brazilian candidate has a trajectory in the areas of Human Rights, Justice, Public Security and Citizenship. Sá e Silva acted in no (Institute of Applied Economic Research) and develops academic activities as a professor at the University of Oklahoma and associate researcher at the Harvard Law School in the United States.

The IACHR, an organ linked to (Organization of American States), works in the promotion and defense of human rights in the Americas, focusing on historically discriminated groups. According to the MDH (Ministry of Human Rights), since 1959, the Commission plays a central role in advancing the implementation of human rights standards on the continent.

The choice of new commissioners will be between June 25 and 27, during the OAS General Assembly in Antigua and Barbuda, in the Caribbean. 3 new members will be elected to replace commissioners Carlos Bernal Pulido (Colombia), Roberta Clarke (Barbados) and José Luis Caballero Ochoa (Mexico), who end their mandates.

The new terms for the commission will be from 2026 to 2029. In addition to the 3 commissioners at the end of them, they are part of the IACHH: Andrea Pochak (Argentina), Gloria Monique de Mees (Suriname), Arif Bulkan (Guyana) and Edgar Stuardo (Guatemala).
