On the second Sunday of May, while many families celebrate Mother’s Day with affection and honors, 118 children in Acre carry a silent mourning: that of the maternal absence caused by the extreme violence of femicide. Between January 2018 and January 2024, 71 women were murdered in the state for gender motivations. Of these, 72% were mothers – and left behind orphaned children, whose lives were marked forever.
The data are part of the feminicidometer, a tool of the Public Prosecution Service of the State of Acre (MPAC) created to ensure transparency and social control over the crimes of femicide. The survey shows that among the affected children and adolescents, 24 witnessed the murder of their mothers, a deep trauma that tends to reverberate for a lifetime.
At least 72% of murdered women had children, leaving 118 orphaned children and adolescents: Reproduction
Most victims were between 20 and 24 years old-a young generation, often starting maternity and adulthood, which had their plans interrupted by partners or former violent companions. The study also revealed a scenario of social and racial vulnerability: 86% of murdered women were brown or black, reflecting the disproportionate impact of gender violence on black women.
MPAC’s analysis also addressed the victims’ marital profile: 45% were in a relationship at the time of the crime, while 24% had already separated or were in the process of separation – which reinforces the warning that the moment of breakup is often one of the most dangerous for women in situations of violence.
In the professional aspect, most of the murdered women were housewife (21), followed by students (10), autonomous (6) and farmers (4). In 12 cases, the occupation was not informed, which may indicate informality or lack of proper data record.

According to family members, Janice was in the apartment with her son, Jhonatas, when Gilberto arrived in a red -colored Lander motorcycle. He parked on the street and went to the property. He then drew a firearm and fired at least five shots, which hit Janice in the chest and face region. During the attack, Jhonatas was hit by two shots – one in the right arm and one on the left. After the action, Gilberto fled the scene.
The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) was triggered, and two ambulances were sent – one basic support and one of advanced support. However, when they arrived, the paramedics could only see Janice’s death. Jhonatas received the first calls still at the scene and was sent to the Rio Branco Emergency Room, in a stable health.
