Africans are among the most popular and most commonly planted flowers in the Czech gardens. Not only are they blooming all summer, but they also repel unpleasant slugs and mosquitoes. They greatly combine aesthetics with practical purpose.

Africans, also known as Aksamites, are undemanding and grateful flowers that will light up every flower bed, box or front garden with their rich color. Their flowers in shades of gold, orange and rusty colors create rich, shaggy shrubs that bloom continuously from spring to the first frosts. It is perfect for both ornamental flower beds and as a fill between vegetables or mixed plantings. Typical pungent fragrance, which may not be quite pleasant to some people, has surprisingly practical advantages. It acts as a natural repellent, repelling insects and various garden pests. Due to their resistance and ability to endure drought and moisture, and thanks to minimal care requirements, Afrikaans are also an ideal choice for beginning gardeners or those who have no time to spare.

Natural repellent, Africans

The distinctive, almost pungent scent of Africans may not be pleasant to everyone, but this strong odor makes them an effective garden protector. The characteristic aroma is due to a naturally occurring substance called Thiofen. It is an essential oil that acts as a natural repellent. When insects or other pests approach the plant, a strong smell often discourages it so much that he decides to look for another goal. Thanks to this, Afrikaans effectively protect not only themselves but also the surrounding plants from attacking.

Africans repel a wide range of pests, from aphids, mothers, spider mites and thrips to flies, wasps and mosquitoes. They also have a significant effect against larger visitors such as deer or hares, which do not smell and avoid beds where aksamites grow. Some varieties even counteract the nematodes, microscopic worms that are harmful to the roots of vegetables. If the Africans are planted in time, they can prevent their multiplication and spread, thus contributing to the health of the whole garden without the need for chemical intervention.

In addition to its above -ground defensive functions, Africans also operate underground. The roots of some species, especially the aksamite degraded, release a substance called alpha-Terthenyl into the soil. This chemical compound prevents the development of eggs of nematodes and may act in the soil for a longer period of time after the plant death. As a result, Africans become natural protection especially for vegetables such as tomatoes, beans, peppers, cucumbers, but also for strawberries, onions or broccoli. Their repellent effect thus contributes not only to plants’ health, but a more environmentally friendly way of growing.
