At least 14 people died after poisoning illegal alcohol in Punjab, the authorities arrested seven suspects.
At least fourteen people died and six had to be hospitalized in a critical condition in the north of the Indian state of Punjabs after alcohol poisoning on Tuesday night. According to the AP report, TASR reports this.
Police have arrested seven people on allegations of delivering illegal alcohol in five villages near Amritsar in the north of Punjab. The authorities reportedly launched an operation immediately after the incident to break the network of dubious alcohol suppliers.
Interventions of local authorities
The local government sent doctors to the villages to check people who drank alcohol of dubious origin. People with signs of poisoning are quickly transported to hospitals. Investigators have not yet stated what component in illegal alcohol caused death and hospitalization.
In India, deaths are very widespread as a result of drinking illegal alcohol of domestic production, especially in rural areas where people seek it for its lower price.
