Police have arrested seven people on allegations of delivering illegal alcohol in five villages near Amritsar in the north of Punjab. The authorities reportedly launched an operation immediately after the incident to break the network of dubious alcohol suppliers.

Interventions of local authorities

The local government sent doctors to the villages to check people who drank alcohol of dubious origin. People with signs of poisoning are quickly transported to hospitals. Investigators have not yet stated what component in illegal alcohol caused death and hospitalization.

In India, deaths are very widespread as a result of drinking illegal alcohol of domestic production, especially in rural areas where people seek it for its lower price.
