Black people are 77% of homicides in Brazil

Data from Atlas of Violence show that mortality rate is concentrated among young people aged 15 to 29

The (Institute of Applied Economic Research) released this Monday (12.MAI.2025) the Atlas of Violence of 2025, which indicates that 76.97% of homicides in 2023 in Brazil were of black and brown people. Of the 45,747 registered cases, 35,213 were from black people. Here is (PDF – 6.8 MB).

Homicide data in Brazil also revealed that the highest mortality rate is concentrated among young people 15 to 29 yearsrepresenting almost half of the murders, with a total of 47.8% of cases.

The survey also shows that 21,856 of the young people were killed prematurely, which corresponds to an average of 60 young people murdered a day in the country. Considering the historical series of the last 11 years, there were 312,713 young victims of lethal violence in Brazil.

In 2023 35,213 homicides of black and brown people were recorded in Brazil, a small variation of -0.9% in absolute numbers compared to 2022.

The homicide rate in 2023 among black people in Brazil was 28.9 per 100,000 inhabitants. This represents a 2.7% drop compared to the previous year and 21.5% compared to 2013. Already among non -black people, the rate was lower: 10.6 per 100,000 inhabitants. In this group, the reduction was 1.9% compared to 2022 and 32.1% compared to 2013.

Amapá and Bahia are among the states with the highest homicide rate of black people per 100,000 inhabitants. Read:

The research uses for the calculations of 100,000 inhabitants’ base homicide rates to obtain better standardization. In addition to using estimated populations based on the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) PNADC.
