Announced as the new coach of the Brazilian National Team on Monday (12), the Italian enters a very short list of foreigners who directed the men’s soccer in Brazil. Before him, Uruguayan Ramón Platero, Portuguese Joreca and Argentine Filpo Núñez were the names from outside the country in office. The last of them was Núñez, 60 years ago, in 1965, inserted in a very specific context. At the time, he was a coach, who, due to the strength of his cast, was chosen to represent the Brazilian team in duel with the inauguration game of Mineirão. That is, the Argentine led his Palmeiras athletes dressed in the shirt of Brazil.

Also directed by the selection the Portuguese Jorge Gomes de Lima, Joreca, in 1944, but shared the function with the Brazilian Flávio Costa, known mainly for his work in Rio de Janeiro football. The partnership lasted only two games against Uruguay, both won by Brazil – 6-1 and 4-0. In 1945, Costa began running the team alone.

The Brazilians won both games against the Uruguayans, but lost 4-1 and drew 2-2 in the duels with the Argentines, who finished the championship as champions.
